ree
wedding at Cana

Who do not know the miracle of water changed to wine. Wedding at Cana is one of the favorite and all time loving story of the Christians. But today I would like t inform you that it is also one of the important studies from the bible. Many simply preach and leave it as a Jesus’s first Miracle but let us not forget there are some important hidden secrets of the Jesus’s ministry in that.

Background of the Narrative

Political condition of the Land

- The land of Israel is under the rule of Roman empire

- The nation was ruled by the Herodians who received directions from the Roman empire

Economical condition

- The people of Israel are burdened with taxes

- The tax collectors are corrupted and are persecuting the citizens

- The poorer are the ones who suffered a lot

Social condition

- The people are divided with in themselves

- Many riots and movements took place for the freedom of Israel

Religious condition

- The scholars, scribes, Pharisees were misusing the scripture for their personal gains and agendas.

- The traditions were given more importance than the scripture

- People are desperate and were waiting for the messiah

- People are in search of help from the God

Let us also understand about the hero of the story JESUS

- Jesus was a good human being and also a good God

- He is an understanding God and human being

- When he was born the days and the atmosphere of the nation was very dangerous. The rulers were so cruel that they killed small babied mercilessly.

- Jesus was born in a poor, hardworking family. They were carpenters by profession.

- Jesus is coming from a poor family. They are regular at paying taxes even though it is a burden.

At these times a joyful celebration is going to happen in Cana

From the verse john 2:1-11

Jesus and his mother and disciples were also invited to the wedding, after they reached they come to know from Mary that the wine ran out. Mary informs Jesus and ask him to do something. To that Jesus asked her to wait till his time arrives, so Mary ordered servants to Listen to Jesus and do whatever he asks them to do. When the time of Jesus was arrived, he asked the servants to fill the stone jars and he asked them to take wine in the mug and take to the master of the banquet. The master was surprised and told that it is the best wine that he got now.

From this narrative let us learn five important lessons

1 Each and every follower of Christ should have the heart of Mary.

2 Make a habit of waiting for the time of God

3 Make a habit of obeying the will of God

4 Believe in God who gives the best.

5 Never publicize your spiritual gifts. (keep away your publicity in the ministry)

1. Each and every follower of Christ should have the heart of Mary

Mary was invited for the marriage function. She may not have big role in the marriage function. But when she got the news of wine ran out she hurried to Jesus and informed him. let us test, are we really having a heart of Mary? Are you a kind of person who enjoys the others troublesome times and lacking? Or are you a kind of person who take part in the sorrow of others? Let us look into the life of Ruth a woman who said your people are my people and your God is my God. Can we say with the Christian spirit to the neighbors and the church believers that your problems are my problems and your sorrow is my sorrow. Your joy is my joy and your happiness is my happiness. Yes we should make a habit of understanding others and helping others. This is what the story is explaining us to learn from it that we should be always available for others in their tough times.

2. Make a habit of waiting for the time of God.

When Jesus was informed by Mary about the lack of wine, he asked her to wait until his time. The time is in the hands of God. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14). From the old testament that God reversed the time for king Hezekiah (2 Kings 20:1-11). This proves that God is the only one who have the authority on time. If you wait upon him he will answer to u in proper time.

3. Make a habit of obeying the will of God.

Jesus told to Mary to wait for his time. Mary wasn’t reluctant for her prayer for the miracle to happen. She simply obeyed and asked the servants to obey whatever Jesus commands them to do. When Jesus time was arrived, he told them to fill the stone jars. They neither questioned nor gave any suggestions to Jesus. We have many plans in our hearts and minds and ask Jesus to act according that fulfill our plans. That’s not the correct way. If you want to God to act leave everything and all the authority of your life, family and all the aspects of your life he will do everything beautifully. Servants did as Jesus asked them to do and the result is that they had the best wine in the Jars. If the servants didn’t obey the miracle wouldn’t take place. Sometimes we expect miracles from God but it didn’t happen because we do not heed to his will and will not submit ourselves to do his will.

4. Believe in the God who gives you the best.

We serve a God who provides. It is his promise that he will give us what to eat, drink and wear. But there is a condition that we should seek his kingdom and righteousness. (Matt.6:33). Our God is the good shepherd and will lead us in good pastures and running streams. He will never forget our needs. Such a wonderful God we have. So in all situation of life remember his grace and submit yourselves to God and take a decision that you shall seek his kingdom and righteousness.

5. Never publicize your spiritual gifts

From the ministry of Jesus, we can see that he never publicized his ministry and his miracles. But today it is completely opposite. If we observe carefully the faith is replaced by marketing strategies and were publicizing. Miracles were shown repeatedly in YouTube channels, TV shows, and Social media platforms. But Jesus ministry was totally against this if we read carefully (john 2:9) When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), (NASV).

It is the first miracle of Jesus and he performed an amazing miracle i.e. water to wine but other than the servants no one knows. Can we see such a kind of ministry today? We can see from the ministry of Jesus he never performed any miracle, signs or wonders against the demand of situation. He never asked the crowd to gather to show miracles, signs and wonders. He drew himself out from the crowd who asked him to perform signs and wonders. My dear readers please why don’t we adopt the style of Jesus’s ministry and give glory to God whenever the miracle happens in our life, or neighbors, in the church, congregation or the conventions, or the gospel crusades when we pray? Lets take a decision that we shall never do any publicity of miracles, signs and wonders that happens when we pray. Let the Glory be to the Lord always ever and forever.

May God bless you…
