Oh my Blessed Parents!

Exodus 20:12

“Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

The bible is one of the greatest books of the world. Today many nations use bible for writing the rules and regulations because of its moral values and ethics. And the ethics of the bible is considered very important in the world and hence the bible is considered as the book of great ethics of the world.

But today the Christians are unable to understand the prominence of the bible and its teachings. The churches are running after the useless stories in their preaching rather than giving the pure spiritual food from the bible. Bible never discriminate any one. Bible gives importance to everyone. It gives the idea of progressive inclusion than the regressive exclusion. It also gives importance in all the aspects of each and every one’s life.

The above verse is from the ten commandments that was given to Israelites by God through Moses. Each and every commandment of God is important. These ten commandments consists of rules on daily devotion, and ethics, obedience etc. But I would like to bring you to the attention of this particular verse.

In the present times, the importance of obedience and respect is getting degraded in the children towards their parents. And the system of different countries are helping the children to live according their own wish and desires. Today’s children are very reluctant to be corrected by parents or elders. They are addicted to the mobiles and the other social media and these are influencing them in all the aspects of life. The children are not interested in God, the church and the word of God. They are arguing to skip the Sunday schools in the church.

This was the condition even in the earlier times. The children are obsessed with other activities rather than obeying to the parents. The Yahweh was very serious about the discipline of Children. He considered Israelites as his own children and he taught all the values and taught them how to live. Hence he gave commandments to the Israelites as a father and asked them to obey.

From the above passage let me give you three dimensions of the verse.

1. Human beings towards God

2. Parents towards parents

3. Sons towards parents.

1. As a child of God, we should always obey and honor God because he is our father. He is the creator. He is the one who is the author of everything. He is the first and last. In him we all were created. Hence he is the father of everyone and no one can deny it. As a father, he loves us, provides us, nurture us, care us, protect us…

Isa.64:8

But now, O LORD, you are our Father

Exodus 4:22

"Then you shall say to Pharaoh, 'Thus says the LORD, "Israel is My son, My firstborn.

Deuteronomy 14:1

"You are the sons of the LORD your God.

Malachi 2:10

"Do we not all have one father?

God is our heavenly father and we are called his sons for we are in Christ. As we are having a father in heaven we are ought to obey and respect his commandments. We are called for it. If we obey our heavenly father, we will be blessed in the land that God gave to us and he may give us a long life.

2. We shall obey and honour our earthly parents

Parents are the important part of our lives. No one is above than their parents. Without parents, no one was born into this world. Parents play important role in our life. They are the one who shapes us. They are the first teachers to us. They raise us, feed us, protect us, teach us etc. without parents it will be very difficult to be raised. And it the rule or commandment of God that each and every human being irrespective of their age shall respect their parents.

Colossians 3:20

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

Ephesians 6:1

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

The bible strictly emphasis about the importance of the parents and the duty of the children is all about to obey them all through our lives. Those who rejects parents and deny to respect them are deserved to be punished by God at any cost. So, if we obey our parents we will be blessed with long life and God will not be reluctant to bless us.

3. Teach our Children to obey and honour us so that they will be blessed by God with long life

This is the area where the maximum number of parents fail to teach their children. And today the children are raised in such a way that they are elders to the elders. They don’t know to greet the elders and they don’t keep any manners. The present parents feel very sophisticated in raising their children according to the wishes of their children. Present parents are feeling very shame that if their son or daughter don’t have girlfriends and boyfriends respectively. The present Christian children are finding love in same sex and do not fear God or parents. There are many parents who simply try to fulfil the wishes of their children without even thinking about the aftermath of the situation. And they consider it as a big achievement in their life.

My dear readers we are living in a kind of different world where the fast inclusions and exclusions of culture is taking place. Different kinds of unbiblical, unethical things are happening around us. Who are we going to blame? Let us blame ourselves because we are the reason for it. Each and everything starts from us. If we raise our children in Godly way they shall never go to bad way. What will be the result of it…? The punishment from God.

Hence it is our responsibility to teach our children to obey and respect us so that they will be blessed and enjoy the Long life. The future of Children is on our hands. If you want God to bless your children, then teach your children to obey you. If you don’t want them to be blessed, then leave them and never teach them to obey and honour you… and the final punishment will be from the God.
